Heroin addiction

I happened to catch this on Oprah tonight (it's also to be featured on ABC's Nightline at 11:30). A dangerously prevalent issue....one close to my heart (in the previous 3 years of work I did with heroin and opiate addicted individuals). I had to share this here on my blog. I tried to find actual video footage of either/both programs, but to no avail. If you find Oprah or Nightline and get a chance to watch tonight's episodes, please do. If not, I have attached the following informative article. Refreshingly, it doesn't sugarcoat drug addiction as Hollywood can tend to do; it's raw and very real. People need to be educated on this increasingly pervasive problem, the disturbing reality of heroin addiction.....

Hi there! I have a non-profit organization that supports people on "Medication Assisted Treatment", for anything from chronic pain to opiate addiction/dependence. I just wanted to leave our link in case anyone would like more information. We are VERY fortunate to have Sharon Dembinski with our organization, an expert in Methadone pregnancy. She has a page at our website with an awesome forum as well.

Thanks much!.....Carol

I did watch that Oprah and couldn't believe how many people are addicted to heroin in that area. And that whole family addicted? That was crazy, too. Unbelievable.

Suboxone I believe works well with less complication than methadone. i have tried both suboxone and methadone and suboxone side effect symptoms works well

Jeremy, Thanks for your input. I am curious though, how long did you take suboxone (and are you still on it?)? What about methadone? I am not as familiar with suboxone as I am with methadone, seeing as I worked at a methadone maintainence clinic.

At the risk of sounding like I am an advocate for methadone or anti-suboxone (which I am neither)....I do have to wonder how many clinical trials have been done on suboxone as far as overall effectiveness as opposed to methadone. I could be wrong, but I believe that research on methadone dates back farther than suboxone. I also found that clients I worked with who have tried both seemed to like the convenience of suboxone. As you know, there are tighter regulations with methadone. Seeing as addicts need structure to help guide them through the recovery process (including mental health and medical staff to monitor such medications), I have to say methadone may be the better option in that regard...although I know you were only addressing symptoms. :)

Thanks again for your response.

I have spent a couple of years on suboxone. Like methadone I have gone back to heroin at times. Suboxone on the otherhand comes home with me right from the start. I do not need to go to a clinic like I used to. Methadone I believe wore on me as suboxone I feel pretty normal except as in the mornings which I believe is because of the dose being so low at this point. It seems with opiates the smaller the dose the shorter it can hold you from being sick Suboxone I will say is much easier to reduce dosage amount as it was on methadone.
